Breaking Free from Addiction

Published on October 01, 2025 | By Ola Joshua

The addiction is one of the most powerful chains that may tie the life of a person. Addiction in any form, be it alcohol, drugs, pornography, gambling, or even destructive habits of the mind is a slavery of the soul that leaves one trapped in the vicious circles of shame and defeat. The Bible makes it clear, While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage. (2 Peter 2: 19, KJV). Addiction is not a bad habit- it is a kind of slavery that robs happiness, harmony and goals.

But there is hope! The Word of God promises us that there is no chain that is too heavy that He can break. Jesus said, If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:36, KJV). Independent will power cannot bring true freedom but submission to the power of Christ. When we go to Him with our repentance and faith, He provides us with the power to free ourselves of the vicious circle of addiction and live in the new life.

“Addiction is not just a bad habit—it is slavery of the soul, but Christ gives a new identity where old things pass away and all things become new.”

The first step in getting out of the addiction is to realize our own weakness and invoke the power of God. Our apostle Paul tells us I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Philippians 4:13, KJV). Success is not competing in our strength but inclining ourself towards the grace of God. Among the keys to remaining strong in the battle are prayer, reflection on Scripture and surrendering oneself to godly support.

Recovery is not necessarily something which happens immediately, but God assures us that He will walk with us step by step. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. (Isaiah 41:10, KJV). Even failures are prearranged opportunities to bigger breakthroughs with His hand on us.

“The chains of addiction may be heavy, but the grace of God is always greater, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

Addiction attempts to make a person what he or she cannot do, whereas God gives a person a new identity in Christ. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.( 2 Corinthians 5:17, KJV). By Him, you no longer have to be what you were--you can overcome the shackles and have the life of liberty, tranquility and meaning.

Are you in trouble, today?--then knowest thou that God hath prepared a path to thy salvation. The chains of addiction can be bulky but His grace is greater. Shout to Him, enfold yourself with believers that will pray with you, and continue to proclaim what He has promised on your life. Freedom not only exists--it is the will of God that you should. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17, KJV).
